Outpatient Procedures

Procedures in Hospital
- Some procedures require general anaesthesia and can only be performed in a hospital, either as day surgery or overnight stay.
- The costs will vary depending on whether or not you have private health insurance.
Patients with private health insurance:
- Surgeon's fees: you will have no out-of-pocket charges from the surgeon if your private health policy covers the procedure.
- Anaesthetist's fees: HBF members will have no out-of-pocket costs for anaesthesia. If you're with another fund, your anaesthetist may charge a gap. You will need to discuss this with the anaesthetist prior to surgery.
- Hospital's fees: most of your hospital charges will be covered by your health insurance policy, but you may be required to pay an excess or co-payment under the terms of your health insurance policy. You will need to discuss this with the hospital prior to surgery.
- Surgeon and anaesthetist's fees: if you have a Medicare card, you can take the surgeon's and anaesthetist's invoices to Medicare and receive a rebate. There will also be some out-of-pocket costs. You will need to discuss this with the surgeon and anaesthetist prior to surgery.
- Hospital's fees: you will be required to pay the hospital charges yourself. Medicare does not pay a rebate for hospital fees. You will need to discuss the charges with the hospital prior to surgery.
