Labiaplasty with specialist gynaecologist under local anaesthetic with total out-of-pocket cost $5,500.

What is a Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a procedure to remove or trim the external genitalia. Generally this refers to the labia minora, but the clitoral hood is sometimes involved as well.

Possible reasons for having a labiaplasty include assymetry, friction, infection, lesions, pain, stretching after childbirth, sexual discomfort or aesthetic preference.

Remember, normal female genitalia vary widely in appearance and often changes over time. There is no evidence that labiaplasty improves body image or self-confidence.

The gynaecologist will discuss the labiaplasty procedure in detail with you to help you decide whether it is right for you.

Arranging an Appointment for a Labiaplasty

To start the journey of having a labiaplasty in Perth, you need to get a referral from your GP to see our gynaecologist .

You will need to come for two appointments with the gynaecologist. Both appointments are free of charge.

During the first appointment, the gynaecologist will ask you questions and will examine you with a camera and a monitor screen. The gynaecologist will give you some more information and diagrams. The purpose of this appointment is to find out why you are thinking about a labiaplasty and what you are hoping to achieve.

If you are interested in going ahead, your second appointment is where you sign the paperwork. Feel free to ask lots more questions during this appointment. We want you to be as informed as possible about the procedure before you make your mind up.

Booking the Procedure

We will keep your preferred date available for you after the second appointment, but we won’t officially book the procedure until 7 days after the second appointment. This is a mandatory cooling off period. During the cooling off period, think carefully about whether you want to go ahead with a labiaplasty.

Lastly, after the cooling off period ends, we will contact you to confirm whether you want to go ahead. If you do, we will book the surgery date and send you the invoice and pre-operative instructions.

On the other hand, if you have decided not to go ahead, just let us know and we will release the surgery date to someone else.

The Procedure

The gynaecologist performs labiaplasty in Perth with numbing cream and local labial nerve blocks in our dedicated procedure room.

Because you are awake, you can watch and give feedback on the reshaping of your labial sculpture.

The labiaplasty procedure will take 1-2 hours.

General anaesthesia is also available, but this option has extra fees.

Recovery after Labiaplasty

  • The numbing effect lasts for up to 4 hours.
  • Dissolvable sutures (4-6 weeks) are used.
  • Pain relief: analgesics and ice packs made with condoms help to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Apply antibiotic cream to the incisions twice per day.
  • Take 1 week off work.
  • Avoid heavy physical work for 2 weeks.
  • No contact sports for 6 weeks.
  • No intercourse for 6 weeks.
  • Report any bleeding, severe pain or unusual symptoms to the gynaecologist.
  • The gynaecologist may give you further recommendations or instructions for your recovery.

Risks of Labiaplasty

All surgery carries some degree of risk.

Labiaplasty can sometimes result in:

  • Surgical complications such as bleeding or infection.
  • Scars
    • severe, raised, reddened and itchy scars are a complication that require treatment.
    • some scarring will be permanent but should fade after about a year.
  • Uneven/assymetrical labia that may require revision surgery.
  • Pigmentation (permanent colour change) of the labia.
  • Nerve damage or permanent loss of sensation.
  • Tissue death or skin loss along part of the wound.
  • Risks of anaesthesia including allergic reaction, which can (although rarely) be fatal.
  • Some complications may require further surgery.

This is not a complete list of all possible risks.

Not all patients will experience these complications, but some patients (e.g. due to medical history or lifestyle) may be at an increased risk.

Your gynaecologist will be able to give you more information at your appointment.

Treatment Outcomes

Treatment outcomes can differ for each person. Some patients will experience benefits from the labiaplasty procedure, but success cannot be guaranteed for all.  In particular, there is no evidence that this procedure improves body image or self-confidence.

Additionally, there is a variation in the appearance of normal female genitalia, and there can be normal physiological changes over time. The effects of a labiaplasty cannot be reversed surgically, but the body will continue to undergo normal changes. For instance, change after childbirth or menopause is very common.

Costs of Labiaplasty

  • Total out-of-pocket fee of $5,500.00 for labiaplasty with specialist gynaecologist using numbing cream and local labial nerve blocks.
  • If you opt for general anaesthesia in hospital, extra fees will apply for hospital and anaesthetist.
  • Medicare and Private Health Insurance only pay rebates if the labia protrudes more than 8cm and causes significant functional impairment (see Medicare item # 35534 at mbsonline.gov.au for more information).
