Male Factor Infertility
A proportion of infertility in couples is associated with a male factor anomaly. Various investigations are useful in determining male factor problems and possible corrective actions.
Sperm Analysis
Sperm Analysis is usually performed to gauge sperm quality and function. Several parameters are measured in a collected specimen.
Abstinence for 3-4 days prior to production of a specimen is important, as is the transport time to the laboratory.
The quality of a semen specimen is determined by total count, motility, proportion of progressive sperms and numbers of normal forms.
Testicular Ultrasound
This may be used to detect the presence of a varicocoele, which is a collection of varicose veins around the testicle, usually the left side. The increased veins cause an increase in the temperature of the affected testicle, which may lead to reduced sperm motility. Excision of the varicocele may lead to improved sperm function, especially motility, that will become evident in 3 months’ time.
Sperm Antibodies
The presence of sperm antibodies is often found in fertile men. Its presence in couples with infertility can cause considerable anxiety and lead to various conclusions, leading to unnecessary interventions.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) with washed sperms can often produce better quality sperms and enable successful pregnancy outcomes.
