What is Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation / LVR?
Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation is a new procedure that uses CO2 laser energy to promote collagen and elastin growth. It usually consists of 3 sessions, 4-6 weeks apart, with a top up session 6-12 months later.
The aim of LVR is to increase vaginal lubrication, tighten the vagina, and reduce urinary leakage.
Does it work? Is it safe? What are the risks?
Most commonly, benefits will only be experienced in mild cases, and other options are required to treat more advanced symptoms. For more information on other treatment options, click here.
Additionally, while there are some studies and anecdotal reports of LVR providing benefits to some patients, LVR is a very new treatment and there is no scientific evidence or regulatory endorsement of its safety or effectiveness.
If you request LVR, your gynaecologist will warn you of the potential complications (including vaginal pain, burning, dyspareunia and chronic pain) and discuss the alternative treatment options so that you are fully informed when deciding whether you wish to proceed with LVR.

Treatment Outcomes
Treatment outcomes may differ based on your individual characteristics. While some patients will experience benefits from the procedure, success cannot be guaranteed. There is no evidence that this procedure improves body image or self-confidence.
It is important to note that there is a variation in the appearance of normal female genitalia, and there can be normal physiological changes over time.

Costs
- Surgical fee of $500.00 per session for procedure performed with numbing cream and local labial nerve blocks.
- There are no Medicare or Health Fund rebates.
Note that there is no guarantee that LVR can restore the original condition of the vagina. Reports of increased lubrication and tightness are unproven, and the procedure can be associated with complications that should be discussed with a gynaecologist prior to deciding whether to have the procedure.
