Vaginal Repairs
Vaginal repairs correct prolapses or looseness that are a natural consequence of childbirth and the ageing process.
Types of Vaginal Repair
Bladder and rectal prolapses: During labour, the vaginal tube dilates from 30-40mm to 120-140mm for delivery of the baby. The stretched vaginal tube may leave muscle gaps for the bladder (cystocoele) and rectum (rectocoele) to later prolapse (or herniate) into the vagina. Our gynaecologists commonly perform cystocoele and rectocoele repairs, and Medicare and private health insurance rebates are available.
Vaginal vault repairs (suspension): It is natural for the muscles at the top of your vagina (near your uterus) to become weaker as you get older. As they become weaker, uterus or the top of the vagina can sag down into the vaginal canal, causing a vaginal vault prolapse. Our gynaecologists commonly perform vaginal vault repairs, and Medicare and private health insurance rebates are available.
Vaginoplasty: As a result of the ageing process, the pelvic floor and muscles of the perineum (vaginal opening) may stretch and present a “gape” at the vaginal opening and perceived looseness during intercourse. It is possible to excise and repair the muscles to remove the "gape", but this is classified as a cosmetic procedure, and Medicare and private health insurance rebates are not available.
